US Economy Grows At Fastest Pace For 11 Years

The US economy grew at its fastest annual rate for 11 years in the third quarter, revised official figures show, helping stock markets achieve new record levels.

The Commerce Department measured GDP growth at 5%, on an annualised basis, between July and September.

The raised measurement, from the previous estimate of 3.9%, was due to new data showing growing strength in consumer spending and business investment.

It was the fastest quarterly growth since the summer of 2003 and followed a 4.6% annual growth rate in the April-June quarter.

The announcement was made hours after updated UK economic growth figures painted a weaker picture than had been originally reported.

The US economic performance helped the Dow Jones Industrial Average top the 18,000 point barrier for the first time during early Tuesday trading, as US stocks continued to enjoy a pre-Christmas rally.

The US economy has struggled to regain full health since the financial crisis - largely because millions lost their jobs.

But the country is now on track to have its healthiest year for job growth since 1999.

In November, employers added 321,000 jobs, the biggest one-month increase in three years.

With more people working and having money to spend, solid gains are expected in consumer spending, which accounts for about 70% of the economy.

Lower oil prices are tipped to help keep inflation down and boost disposable income in 2015.
